Annus Horribilis

Last week we discussed the chart of the coronation of the late Queen Elisabeth who sat on the throne for so long, only the Thai King Bhumibol ruled for a longer time. The coronation chart of Elisabeth showed a lot of power, especially by Lord 1 who is placed in his own sign and has the disposition over three other planets besides himself. Disposition is power and so Elisabeth was firmly in control, she has power over more than half of the horoscope, that is, of her environment, her world, because that is what a chart shows. It does not give a map  of the psyche, but an objective overview of the energies working in a situation.

Aldebaran

This strong Lord 1 in the coronation chart is also accidentally strong in the tenth house on Capella, a powerful, combative star of the first magnitude. Also in the tenth house we find the Sun of kingship, on royal Aldebaran, the whole horoscope is a paragon of power. But you can also apply all the prediction techniques you use in any correct horoscope of a beginning like this and in this post we look specifically at the progressions in the coronation horoscope in 1992, a year that the Queen herself described in November of that year as an “annus horribilis”.

It immediately strikes the eye that in that year the direction of the Ascendant conjuncts the evil star Vindemiatrix,  the Sorcerer’s Apprentice who is associated with things that are getting out of hand uncontrollably, more and more:  Annus Horribilis. The second thing that stands out is the secondary progression of the Moon, which has made a conjunction with the Sun in 1992. So that is a progressive New Moon, always a moment of great change and often of crisis! Certainly here, for this progressive NM falls on the malefic Mars  of quarrels and separationmin its fall which therefore shows its worst side, and on Uranus, associated with  the story of the highest celestial god castrated by Saturn, a rather painful affair!

Profection 4

By antiscion, this position also conjuncts the Sun in the coronation horoscope, which reinforces its effect, because it is all about kingship (Sun) and the relationship with the people (the Moon). The fact that the New Moon falls on Castor isn’t exactly positive either. Castor is one of the Twins who are very close, but Castor is the brother who dies in battle and that way the brothers become separated! The profections also work well enough, you take a house for each year and the nature and condition of the house shows in general terms how that year will be. In  the Annus Horribilis the profection has  landed in the fourth house of the family / dynasty. Lord 4 is Jupiter in detriment in the coronation chart on the MC in the difficult disappointing Hyades! Jupiter is by far the most harmful planet in the chart, horribilis, we could say.

Coronation Elisabeth

Last week the chart of the coronation of King Charles the Third was discussed here, but it is of course also very interesting to view the chart of the coronation of his mother, who sat on the throne for so long. We can expect a lot of strength in that chart given the length of her kingship. As with the interpretation of Charles’ coronation horoscope, this will be delineated from an election perspective, as if it was chosen by an astrologer.

We will not only look at the planetary positions and the house ruklerships at that time, but also at the placement of the relevant radix factors. Because if you make an election, they are also important, in this case natal Lord 1 of the person and natal Lord 10 of the job, which are Saturn and Mars. Their positions in the coronation chart is important, in making an election horoscope you also have to take into account the radix factors that relate to the event in question.

Complete disposition

It is unlikely that an astrologer was involved in this, but the power really shines out!! This would not be a bad choice as an election chart. This great power comes from Mercury which is very strong in its own sign in the tenth house and its has the disposition over three more planets! Mercury is also Lord 10 of the job and Lord 1 of the person, so she is firmly in control, Mercury has powerover more than half of the chart. This reflects her long, stable kingship.

This so central and strong Mercury is placed  on the powerful Capella, star of the first magnitude and in conjunction with Mars which is natal Lord 10 of the job! Saturn – important as natal Lord 1 – is in its exaltation on royal Spica, very strong, only the conjunction with Neptune is not so nice. This Saturn makes a trine with the Mars/Mercury conjunction. A little further on in the tenth house we find the Sun, the general significator  of kingship on royal Aldebaran!

Hyads

So far there is only very great power to be seen, but of course there are also countertones. On the MC, Jupiter is in its detriment on Prima Hyadum, the main star of the Hyads associated disappointments. Jupiter is Lord 7 of the partner, so this shows the great difficulties Prince Philip had in settling into his role. That it turned out well in the end, you can see in the disposition that Mercury has over Jupiter, Elisabeth kept control and could continue to steer things in the right direction.

The Moon, the general significator of the people, is also not optimal, it is trining the Sun but also in negative reception with the signifier of kingship. Yet this remains extremely powerful chart that clearly reflects her kingship. The only thing you would have changed asan  astrologer is to crown her fifteen minutes later, so that the Sun on Aldabaran is on the MC and you have got rid of the influence of the Hyads.

King Charles

Saturday Charles was finally crowned King Charles the Third, and the coronation was a spectacle full of traditions, although I understand that even the British had changed certain parts. Of course, we noted the time when the crown was placed on Charles’ head, the chart of that time shows how Charles’ kingship will proceed. The context is of course, important as always and the institution of  kingship is certainly far less uncontroversial now than it was when Elisabeth was crowned.

It is unlikely that this coronation was an election, although the timing was more or less traditional. For at twelve o’clock the Sun is at its highest point on the MC, which is very good for kingship. Unfortunately, it is summer time, so the Sun in this chart is not right on the MC but in the tenth house, still strong but on the MC is better. It is nice for Charles that fixed Leo is on the Ascendant, and that Lord 1, Mercury and the MC are also in a fixed sign. Especially in these times of doubts of the usefulness of kingship, a little fixity is a good thing. Also very good is the very powerful North Node – “super-Jupiter” – on the MC, a placement which we as election astrologers would certainly have preferred.

Andromeda

Venus is of great importance as Lord 10 of the public function and is free from affliction in the very positive eleventh house on the very powerful Betelgeuse (Orion star, too much self-righteousness is a danger!).  So far it looks fine, although the stars on which the Sun is placed are somewhat ambivalent, they are Almach and Menkar from Andromeda and the Sea Monster. The story is that the Sea Monster attacks and tries to devour the chained Andromeda, more concretely indicating the protection of something valuable that is being threatened. That seems to describe the kingship in our times very well, it will have to defend and prove itself. The MC also falls on a star from Andromeda, which emphasizes this theme even more.

Eclipse

What is also striking, is that the coronation took place a day after a lunar eclipse! Of course, the day of an eclipse itself would always be avoided as a moment of crisis, just as the days before it when tension is building. So fortunately for Charles, the eclipse has happened, though it would have been better to take some more distance in time. Still the Sun and the Moon, king and people are in opposite signs, the Moon -the people – is in Scorpio in negative reception with Venus / Lord 10 of the public funtion which should have been avoided. The Moon  – the people’s favor –  is very capracious in its fall, which is reinforced by the trine with the aggressive Mars also in its fall. This Moon position seems to reflect all the risks for his kingship and you would not have allowed it in an election, but fortunately for Charles there are also some very strong points in the chart to compansate for this.

West Francia

In recent weeks, the charts of France were discussed here in connection with the ongoing social upheaval in the country. Monday was May 1st and that brought a crowd of protesters to the streets, in several places it ended in brutal violence, in France things can get hot. The chart used to view this turmoil was that of the Great Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter before the French Revolution and that seemed to work fine as a radix for modern France.

Frankish Empire

But of course, and modern man tends to forget this, there is much more than just modern times. Countries have sprung from roots in the distant past and it is astrology par excellence that can make this visible. The origin of France lies in the old Frankish empire which was divided into three parts in the ninth century, the eastern part eventually became Germany, the middle part did not grow into a country and the western part became France, then still called West Francia.  In 887/88, West Francia became an independent empire, first under the  Carolingian kings and later under the Capetian rulers.

Regulus

In fact, West Francia only came to an end with the French Revolution, but the radix – Latin for the root – always works. That radix is thus the horoscope of the exact moment of the Great Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter,  which preceded the independence of West Francia in 887/888 and that is the chart  of December 28, 868, 19:01:02 UT in Parish, with an Asc of 13.16 Leo. We won’t look at this French radix in detail now, but the Asc falls on the royal Regulus, very appropriate for a powerful country that always played such a big role in Europe!

When looking at these types of horoscopes, it is as if you open a door and you suddenly get a breath-taking view. because a chart from 868 is still relevant and still shows what is happening in France. France is still West Francia! To illustrate this, we take the lunar return made on the basis of this French radix from 868 for November 2015 when the dramatic attack on the Bataclan took place in Paris. Such a bloody event should be visible in a valid horoscope.

Brutal Dog

And that turns out to be the case!! In the lunar return under which the attack took place, the violent planet Mars is on the IC conjunct Jupiter, Lord 8 of the death from the French radix. Pluto, the Lord of the Lord of the Underworld, who so suddenly apppears to grap his victim, stands on the descendant and the brute intimidating Sirius on the Ascendant. So you don’t have to squeeze out the clues. They are evident! This is the impressive perspective on time of astrology. A chart  from 868 shows in detail what happened in November 2015, 1147 years later. That is the essence of astrology, in the beginning everything is there. And for those who still don’t believe it: the direction of the MC is moving over Mars then (not depicted here)!!
